Safety Tips from the Community Safety Seminar
When purchasing holiday gifts, always purchase pricey/valuable items at the end of your shopping day, put them in your trunk and drive home. Pricey/Valuable items should be the last items you buy.
Tip#2
Try to obscure the boxes of pricey/valuable items on garbage day, e.g. do not leave a flat screen TV box visible to the street.
Tip#3
iPods are a quick cash hit and are one of the "most popular" items to grab these days. The white earbuds are a giveaway that you are using an iPod. Read these tips, http://ipod.about.com/od/adjus
Tip#4
Let people know where you are going and when you are returning.
Tip#5
Carry your handbag close to you, but "not" wrapped around your neck. (Yes, I was surprised by this tip also, but if your bag is wrapped around your neck and shoulder and it is yanked, you could sustain injuries or get dragged) .
Tip#6
Keep your keys in your hand or separate from your handbag.
Tip#7
Do not take all your cards/ID with you unless needed
Tip#8
Do not make ATM transactions at night.
Tip#9
Do not give out or write down your PIN.
Tip#10
Do not wear valuable jewelry shopping or walking in the street or mall. Wear it only at the appropriate place and time.
Tip#11
Always have the right amount of cash ready. Do your best to present only the amount due when paying for your purchase, e.g., avoid presenting large bills to the cashier.
Tip#16
Be a good neighbour, keep your eyes and ears open for activity on your street and in your community.
Tip#17
Be ready to help others.
Tip#18
Do not shop at your door, i.e., do not purchase from vendors at your door. If you think a NO SOLICITORS sign will help, use one. Examples: Hot Water Heater inspections, Natural Gas Billing changes, Magazine Subscriptions, etc.
Tip#19
Use only your last name on your mailbox.
Tip#20
Ask delivery people for identification.
Tip#21
Leave interior lights on when you leave your home or apartment. For example: Streets are dark around 5:00 pm in the winter. If you do not come home until after 5:00 pm you should consider leaving a light on when you leave in the morning or use a timer.
Tip#22
Keep doors locked and use your peephole.
